2018 DJL Cabernet Sauvignon

In stock

A medium to full-bodied Cabernet with plenty of depth offering blackberries, dark chocolate and cassis. The pristine fruit and fine tannins combine to produce a very complete, distinctiy Margaret River Cabernet with an elegant structure and a wonderful persistence of fruit framed by quality French oak. Vibrant yet perfectly approachable in its youth, this generous wine will certainly reward with medium-term cellaring.

Cabernet Sauvignon (89%) Malbec (6%) Petit Verdot (5%)
Margaret River
The growing season began with good, even budburst after average Winter rainfall. The mild Spring which followed ensured that there was good flowering and fruit set. A moderate start to Summer, with no heat extremes, set up the harvest well. There was an incredible display of Marri blossom (tagged as a once in a generation ‘mega-blossom’) which meant bird pressure was practically non-existent. A minor rain event occurred in mid-March, which was followed by fine warm conditions which prevailed right through to middle of April allowing all red varieties to achieve great flavour and tannin ripeness. In summary 2018 will be remembered as an outstanding vintage! Approximately half of the fruit is Estate grown in the Wallcliffe subregion, while the remaining half is made up of fruit sourced from mature grower vineyards in the Margaret River subregions of Wallcliffe, Wilyabrup, and Treeton.

The fruit was crushed and destemmed then fermented in static fermenters at 26oC for 5 – 7 days. A portion of the blend was left for a period of extended maceration on skins followed by a gentle pressing adding plushness and a savoury textural element to the wine. The various batches underwent MLF in a combination of tank and barrel before 14 months’ maturation in a selection French oak barriques (25% new).

Gold Medal
One of the many classy cabernets made by Xanadu’s Glenn Goodall. This is more obviously a fruit driven style but there is still that classy winemaking stamp on it. Plush and generous with excellent fruit concentration balanced with fine tannins and some decent French oak.
