Tasting Notes

Inky brilliant purple-red.
So fragrant and complex, the wine is bursting with raspberries, blueberries, black fruits and plums. There’s a purple floral element and a cache of spices, clove, anise, cedar and toasty oak.
The palate is equally as fresh and vibrant, but with further layers of depth and complexity. The berry fruits have a mouth-watering juiciness and the fine tannin a gravelly, granitic texture. There is a darker ferrous element too that is compelling, along with the wine’s fabulous length.
Now through to 2035.

Red and black fruits, together with a panoply of spice aromas, ranging from pink peppercorns to more exotic spice rack spices. Comfortable in its own skin, this strikes the perfect balance between having excellent depth and concentration whilst remaining elegant and pure.

The northern Rhone Valley tradition of blending syrah – aka shiraz – with viognier goes back hundreds of years. In Australia, its history dates back principally to the 1990s. As in France, the better Aussie examples emanate from the cooler regions like the Yarra Valley. While I’m not sure about the percentage of viognier in this wine, you can smell the lifted aromatics of the grape and see the brightness it brings to the purple intensity of colour. On those two points alone, viognier has done its job. A wine of beautifully integrated layers of flavour. It’s all here: the power of sweet, ripe shiraz in black berries and blue fruits, the quiet presence of baking spices, oak support with a hint of wood smoke, and tannins that glide and work with the wine. Lovely.

What a beauty! Black cherries, pressed violets, strawberries and cream – the aromas erupt from the glass as you pour. The fruit is perfectly ripe and fresh – not a hint of jamminess; intensity with elegance. Time in the glass reveals darker tones – black plums and a hint of earthy granite. The gentle seduction continues on the palate with bright red cherries, raspberries and plump blueberries. Delicate baking spices – cinnamon and nutmeg, vanilla pods, a whisper of orange zest – paired with earthy fruit giving rhubarb crumble vibes.  There’s crunchy red apple acidity adding a refreshing lift, and enough fine, ripe tannins to promise longevity in the cellar – if you can wait. Glidingly smooth on the palate, I really wanted this to last forever. Pair with meltingly tender beef cheeks and silky mashed potato on a date night.

The thing about shiraz and viognier, is that it's to overdo the viognier and create a gingery apricot dominant thing that loses the essential shiraz character. This is not one of those. It is an exquisite example of how to do it well, in fact really well. Loads of black fruits immediately evident with a slightly ferrous ironstone things especially on the dry palate. Fine minerally tannins provide a structural core around which the succulent shiraz wraps itself. Bright and so vital with a sustained finish. Cellar 12 years.

A Reserve range has been made at Yering Station since 1997. This is a very fine wine. Grunty but fine. It has richness, it has complexity, it’s muscular with tannin and the finish feels lengthy and sure. Deep, roasted plum flavours with clove, twiggy spice, meat, florals and black cherry. There’s a smoked aspect to the oak and it works a treat. I looked at this over the course of 48 hours and it barely budged, whatever such an observation is worth. At all points though it looked, tasted and felt authoritative.
