Tasting Notes
Inky brilliant purple. |
|
A waft of blackberry, quince and plum. A veritable spice cabinet with nutmeg, anise and cloves supported by a sense of rich, toasted French oak. |
|
Densely structured with a spectrum of dark fruits and spice. Some purple floral notes bring a level of ethereality. The structure is bold and impressive made up of fine, gravelly tannin with a bright mineral acidity. All factors combine for a long, satisfying and velvety finish. |

A wet winter delayed budburst creating a typical cool climate growing season. Vine balance and an even ripening period delivered grapes with exceptional flavour, structure and finesse. |

Everything is just so with this tip-top reserve. It’s full bodied and very rich with lovely spiced plums, mocha and licorice root flavours. The tannins are velvety and plush and this feels quite sumptuous, even decadent. Hard to resist now, but will reward more in time.

Deep, bright red/purple colour, with a fragrantly spicy, floral aroma, clean and fresh
and bright. Rich fruit with some cool-grown peppery notes. The wine is intense and
refined, focused and piercing with elegance and persistence but no suggestion of
heaviness. It’s light on its feet but powerful, and has excellent depth and intensity. A
superb wine.

Yering has been one of the champions of this style and continues to use the name shiraz viognier when others have dropped it. The two varieties were co-fermented, and this has contributed to the firmer tannins. The aroma is highlighted by aromas of spicy ginger and even a trace of stone fruit, quince, and blackberry. The palate is quite firm, and it will take a little time to reveal its best. This is a bold and bright statement of this style. And there is so much there that longer term cellaring will be the go.

A Reserve range has been made at Yering Station since 1997. The tannin here is ultra, ultra-fine. The fruit is ripe and luscious but not overdone, and feels measured. So too with the oak, which inputs woodsmoke, coffee and cedar, though seamlessly with the fruit, which throws cherry plum, violet and red liquorice. There’s a whisper of herbs/undergrowth here too; you have to be sitting/tasting in a clinical environment to really notice it. In all it’s a highly accomplished red wine; clean, generous, silken and refined, at once.

Yering Station was one of the first wineries in recent years from the Yarra to trial shiraz viognier blends, long after Bailey Carrodus at Yarra Yering. They have had plenty of practice and it shows in this wine which is a seamless and serious example of the blend, although one that needs some time to show its best.
Deeply coloured, the aromas are pure and bright; mulberry and violets plus just a touch of violets and spice all with an attractive veneer of new French oak. The palate is then dry and intense with beautifully concentrated, slick dark fruits and a velvety texture all supported by fine yet firm tannins. It’s finely balanced although embryonic right now, just hinting at its future, and is a great example of the style at the top of its game.
